A Casual Chat with Chris DuBois

I recently had the incredible opportunity to participate in an LP Creative Therapy workshop, and the highlight was getting to ask Chris DuBois, the renowned songwriter and music publisher (Sea Gayle Music) a burning question.

I asked him to paint a picture of the best meeting with a budding songwriter, and his response was as enlightening as it was genuine.

According to Chris, the magic happens when he stumbles upon exceptional songs during a meeting. Those are the tunes he can't wait to share with his creative team, the kind that makes him say, "You've got to hear this!" But it's not just about the music; it's the intangible, that X-factor personality that makes a songwriter easy to work with. As he put it, it's that indescribable vibe in the room.

We delved into the dynamics of songwriter personalities, acknowledging that while talent is crucial, a good working relationship is equally vital. Chris emphasized the importance of managing egos and ensuring a harmonious environment for creativity to thrive.

I was particularly intrigued by Chris's behind-the-scenes process. He explained how, even after a fantastic first meeting, Sea Gayle Music takes the time to match songwriters with others in the company. It's about more than just the songs; it's about how well they gel together creatively. Chris highlighted the family-like culture at Sea Gayle Music, where relationships are nurtured before publishing deals are offered.

The conversation also touched on the role of genre in the industry. Chris emphasized the significance of aligning with the right genre, considering factors like radio exposure and commercial viability. It was evident that success isn't one-size-fits-all in the diverse world of music.

This candid exchange with Chris DuBois shed light on the nuances of the songwriting business, from the magic of great songs to the importance of personality and collaboration. It was a glimpse into the genuine and thoughtful approach that has made Sea Gayle Music a powerhouse in the industry.

As we wrapped up our chat, it became clear that Chris's wisdom extends beyond the creative process; it's about fostering relationships and building a sustainable, supportive music community.
